The setting up of a computer-based information system for tourism legislation was initiated by the Documentation Resources Department in 2002.
From the outset, it was clear this system should be accessible online through the WTO Website and especially, that it should avoid any duplication of effort with respect to legislative information services already operating nationally and internationally.
With this in mind, the Tourism Legislation Database- LEXTOUR has been designed to act as a referral system facilitating direct access through links to external websites, databases and information servers on tourism legislative data produced and distributed by authoritative sources such as parliaments, central government bodies (including National Tourism Administrations), universities, professional associations, etc.
In most cases, these external information systems supply references to and/or the full text of national-level legislative and regulatory instruments governing the main aspects of the social and economic activity which includes tourism. Only one third of the three hundred systems currently identified in some 130 countries focus exclusively on tourism legislation.
In order to ensure that LEXTOUR remains a reliable source of information, links to the selected websites and databases will be regularly reviewed and updated.
It is expected that LEXTOUR will encourage the creation of online tourism-related legislative information systems under the auspices of the National Tourism Administration in those countries where such databases are not yet available. New developments in this respect will be reported periodically.
Suggestions and comments to update and improve LEXTOUR are most welcome. Contact us at lextour@world-tourism.org
